Editorializing

You are the editor of a daily newspaper.  It may be a small-town newspaper, such as the Hillsboro paper, or a large city newspaper, such as the New York Times.  Such newspapers are not only filled with factual news reports, but also editorials, which are the opinion of the editor and may therefore be one-sided.  Editorials are written to influence readers’ thinking and actions and can be very powerful.

Directions:

  1. Write an editorial about the Cates trial.  Cites details and give your opinions about some aspect of it.  Try to influence reader’s thinking and actions.

  1. Include a photograph or cartoon to illustrate your ideas.  Write a caption beneath it, using the same editorial voice as your article.
