They had to fight custom and public opinion, using only a revolutionary idea as ammunition. Listed below are some teachings that were once considered revolutionary or illegal. You are a defense attorney for the person who taught them. For each teaching, write a few sentences that detail what you will say or do to prove that your client is not guilty. Be creative, but not ridiculous.

1. All people, regardless of the color of their skin, should be free.

2. People are intelligent enough to govern themselves.

3. Women should be allowed to vote.

4. Women should be paid the same wages as men for doing the same job.

5. Children should not be allowed to work in factories.

6. All children should be educated at public expense.

7. Females as well as males should be allowed to serve in the armed forces.
